A New Chapter for The Gallery of Hong Kong Art School
A School Gallery has been formed with efforts from the School, its staff members, students and alumni since 2001. Over the past 10 years of time, the Gallery has been through different steps and changes, in terms of its location, personnel, and its name. To cope with the constant and vigorous movements in the landscape, changes and modifications somehow become inevitable in this age; yet, the School is always positive and can be sure that every new step and every new challenge would in fact help better shape and strengthen the development of the Gallery.
At the threshold of a new decade of development, sustainability and the continual development of the Gallery become the crucial topics for review. Thanks to the students and alumni for their genuine comment and support, and thanks for the true sharing between the School and the alumni, a better and a more sustainable structure of Gallery has now been devised, and a new chapter of the Gallery is about to kick-start in this new year of 2012.
Its New Mode of Coordination & Operation
The Gallery will be coordinated by the School, with full support from academic staff for its coordination, with advices from academic staff and alumni for its development direction, and with assistance from administrative staff and students for its operation. This new working team from now on will continue to support, facilitate, and assure the quality of the exhibitions to be held at the Gallery, to enhance and maximize the exposure and the value of the Gallery, and to bring the best of the Gallery to the community.
Its New Name
The Gallery of Hong Kong Art School located at the School’s Main Campus (on the 10/F of the Hong Kong Arts Centre) has been named as ‘White Tube’ over the past few years. The School has been grateful to have a team of dedicated students and alumni looking after the Gallery and providing the Gallery with coordinating effort and support under the name of ‘White Tube’. Special thanks to alumni, Mr. Damon Tong, Mr. Leo Wong, and Ms. Siumou Chow in this connection.
The ‘White Tube’ has been adopting a special mode of operation all the way, it has been a rent-free space provided for students and alumni to operate mostly on their own. Fundraising activities were also carried out before 2006 to generate financial support for operational and maintenance needs. Among the School, the alumni and the students, running the ‘White Tube’ has been a unique experience with both smiles and tears; and realistically, sustainability has always been an alarming issue under this operational mode. Despite all the ups and downs, the School has always been grateful and proud that the Gallery has witnessed and testified the artistic development of many students and alumni of the School, in terms of their development in gallery coordination and operation, as well as in exhibition experience.
In the coming period of time, as the ‘White Tube’ will also hope to further head towards its own establishment, ‘White Tube’ will no longer be designated or serving as the School’s Gallery. In other words, ‘White Tube” and the Gallery of the School are parting, but with mutual understanding and countless blessings for each other. And, in this new chapter of development, the gallery space on the 10/F of the Hong Kong Arts Centre will from now on be simply, straightforwardly, and accordingly be named as <The Gallery of Hong Kong Art School>.
The Transition
The coming months (from January 2012 to end of April 2012) will be the transitional period. The existing team of dedicated ‘White Tube’ colleagues and the new working team of the Gallery will work together closely to honor and realize all transitional measures, and will faithfully prosper the future operation of the Gallery.
