The Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) programme, a joint
programme of Hong Kong Art School and Royal
Melbourne Institute of Technology University (RMIT),
enters its 10th year. A decade ago, local programme
for training professional artists were few and far
between, the population of visual arts practitioners
was growing at a crawling speed. It not only meant
a scarcity of newcomers, but also a paucity of
knowledgeable arts promoters and appreciators. One
of our key beliefs at that time was to broaden the
base for visual arts first and to take care of its longterm
ecological development later. After five years
of horizontal development we found the time ripe
for more specialized training. Besides painting and
ceramics as major subjects, we planned to introduce
more courses such as photography and sculpture.
A comprehensive syllabus incorporating specialized
subjects finally comes into being in 2008.
A decade is not a short period of time, yet the past
ten years only marked the first step in our road of
education, because we know, edification and nurture
cannot be achieved overnight.
