In Basquiat, the film he directed, painter Julian Schnabel frets that artists and their works are often not understood by their contemporaries with this line, “Your audience is not even born.”
The film describes the art scene of the 80s, a
bygone era of the last century. Twenty years has
since passed, here and now, art is still something
that raises eyebrows, something that the public
is dimly aware of it.
Nevertheless, it is not exactly a bad thing. A
suitable distance allows greater space for artistic
creation and expression that is not readily
