Aims & Objectives

The programme nurtures teachers, social workers, theatre artists and allied professionals to be the pioneers in drama education. The professional training received by students will enable them to demonstrate an in-depth theoretical and practical understanding about drama education and acquire necessary artistic, pedagogical and management skills for implementing and evaluating their own way of drama education practice. Students will become the leader of the exciting and unprecedented drama education in Hong Kong whilst learning to be independent researchers. Graduates from the Master of Drama Education with Honours will be in an advanced position to proceed PhD degree in Griffith University which is regarded as one of the world's most important drama education research institution.

Medium of Delivery The official medium of instruction will be English. Practical and production work will be supplemented with Cantonese or other languages according to context. All reading materials and course assignments will be in English.
Admission Requirements
Holder of a Bachelor degree from a recognized tertiary institution, or equivalent; and
Pass the admission committee in a qualifying interview and/or test; and
Pass the Griffith University English language requirement. (For example, holding document evidence that English is or was language of instruction, or a minimum overall band score of 6.5 on IELTS with no sub-score of less than 5.5.)
(Applicants with substantial relevant working experience (of 5 years or more) in professional theatre performance, community work and drama education may be considered for admission according to the experience and reputation in their field of expertise. These applicants will need to provide evidence that they meet the admission requirement via the qualifying admission test, interview and employer's reference letter.)

Course Description
     
Dramatic Form through
Improvisation

In this course, students will explore the elements of dramatic form through improvisation (process drama). Students will develop practical skills and theoretical understanding as they experience, reflect upon and analyse the creation of dramatic meaning in process forms.
     
Drama in Education
This course introduces the pedagogy of drama and the use of drama as a teaching tool across the curriculum in a range of contexts, in and beyond schools. It entails the planning, implementation and critical reflection upon a piece of basic drama education at the students’ own work contexts.
     
Drama Education Production
Project

This course explores a diverse range of educational applications for theatre in contemporary society and introduces the students in a practical way to the craft of making and presenting group-devised educational theatre for a specific educational/community context. Students will create and perform their own group devised work.
     
Advanced Drama Education
This course introduces students to the specialist areas of knowledge of the drama curriculum, provides competence in long-term-planning for drama, and provides the students with techniques for addressing classroom management issues..
     
Drama Research Project:
Philosophy & Pedagogy of
Drama

Students will be engaged in a performance project utilizing the methodology of ethnodrama, through which students will develop understanding on the relationship between dramatic erformance, experiential pedagogy, research and enquiry.

Psychology of Drama
Education

The course explores the crucial psychological theories and practices that have been central to the development of drama education. Students will be investigating a specific manifestation of the psychology of drama education in a particular educational setting using the case study research methodology.
     
Drama Research Project:
Drama Education in Society

Students will explore the place of drama in society, and investigate (through an action research project) the potential of drama education as an agent of social change – to understand the role of drama in modeling social reality and conditions, in both celebrating and interrogating the social world, and in providing social change mechanisms.
     
Drama Research Project:
Reflective Practice
This course introduces students to the nature of reflective practice, both as a research methodology and as a way of mproving professional competence in teaching.
