Violet Shum is a Hong Kong based visual artist. She spent her early years to study painting from portrait artist Mr. Wong Kum. In 2003, she received her Bachelor Degree of Arts in Fine Art from the RMIT University (programme co-presented with Hong Kong Art School). In 2016, she earned her Master Degree of Arts in Philosophy from Hong Kong Chinese University. In 2017, she attended the Art Specialist Course of Sculpture at Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre and gained a Creative Award. Violet was also awarded the VSC Freeman Foundation Asian Artists’ Fellowship 2010-11, and in 2012, she was the finalists of Cliftons Art Prize and won the People’s Choice Award. Violet has been taking active roles in graphic and arts as well as arts education. She is interested in transforming industrial materials, such as stainless steel mesh and wire, into artworks, but at the same time natural elements also plays an intricate part in her works. Her works represent both strength and gentleness, bringing viewers from a high-tech age back to a humanly world.
