In Search of Tang Heritage - Revisiting Chinese traditional arts in Japan
Nara ‧ Koyasan ‧ Kyoto

Hong Kong Art School, in collaboration with Joint Publishing Co., Ltd., brings art lessons out of books and classrooms. Let travelling experience become the key for you to understand art and culture. In the upcoming October, immense yourself in the crisp yet poetic autumn air at the ancient capitals of Japan. We will guide you to Nara and Kyoto, as well as the historic temple town of Koyasan, in search of Chinese artistic heritage. 

In terms of artistic and cultural heritage, the bond between China and Japan has been substantial since ancient times. Many of the traditional art forms that were originated in China but then became lost in the long course of the Chinese history, are still miraculously preserved in Japan. This tour to Japan will lead you to explore arts and traditions that were once flourished in China. It provides you with another angle to interpret Chinese arts and traditions, and another perspective to appreciate Japanese arts and culture. Focal points of exploration include artworks transported from China to Japan, sculpture, architecture, gardens, the tea tradition and the corresponding Buddhist concepts and traditions.

  • Viewing the specially selected artworks at the Annual Shosoin Exhibition in Nara
  • Visiting Historic Temples dating back to more than a millennium, including the world's oldest surviving wooden architectural structure, Horyuji, also Kofukuji, Chuguji, and Byodoin; beholding the national treasures as well as the Buddhist sculptures therein
  • Lodging at the Mountain Temple Town, Koyasan, which just celebrated its 1,200th anniversary. Established by monk Kukai, Koyasan is the home to over 110 Buddhist temples of the Shingon sect of Buddhism and over 200,000 tombstones, which are the final resting places for countless historically renowned figures in Japan. 
  • Experiencing Zen aesthetics through Tea Ceremony and Zen Meditation, visiting the most historic Zen temple in Kyoto, Kenninji

A series of talks will be specially organized by the Hong Kong Art School and the Joint Publishing, interested parties are able to know more about the art history, the types, forms and the making process of artworks.

Participants of the Tour will be able to attend the talks with priority and without additional fee. The Talks will be held in September and October at the Main Campus of the Hong Kong Art School (10/F, Hong Kong Arts Centre, 2 Harbour Road, Hong Kong).
