Emerging Technologies for 21st Century Art


This course aims to introduce different technologies currently implemented in art industries such as developments in NFTs Blockchain, VR, AR, and much more.

One of the big developments in the digital art world covered in this course is the advent of NFT markets. NFTs stand for Non-Fungible Tokens, which means each piece is unique and cannot be duplicated in the blockchain. By diving deep into this industry, students will learn about the digital marketplaces backed with blockchain technologies that bring rise to secure platforms hosting NFTs.

Recently, many multinational luxury brands, like LV, Gucci and Chanel, have started to provide NFTs for their artworks, events, and products. This technology is disruptive impact on many aspects of the digital art industry. This course aims at equipping students with knowledge of navigating this space and the ability to create next generation art products.

Students will have a real world understanding about these innovations, as well as get hands-on practical experience creating art with the use of cutting-edge technologies. This may include, rendering, 3D modeling, minting NFTs and much more.



Mr. Jack CHEN is a serial entrepreneur in Fintech and Blockchain space. Jack has cofounded many startups in Hong Kong and GBA areas. He has co-founded the city’s first smart coins machine network—HEYCOINS, allowing users to convert their physical coins into digital currency in their e-wallets, vouchers, or tokens. He has also co-founded Asia’s first pay-as-you-go insurtech firm—HEYBO, invested by a global insurance firm, in this startup we enable people to activate/deactivate microinsurance through our app wherever and whenever they want. Later on, Jack became passionate about blockchain technology, he then co-founded Moon Lab together with a few HKUST alumni, offering unique NFT, and many blockchain related solutions. Jack received his bachelor’s degree in Risk Management from Lingnan University, MPhil degree from HKUST, he is also a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley.
