Introduction to 4×5 Large Format Camera Photography Class – Development and Printing Black & White Workshop 

This course allows students to experience the unique aspects of using a large format camera. Participants will gain a clear understanding of the 4×5 camera and its role in large format photography. 

 

  • Photo References: Differences between traditional black and white photographs and printed photos. 
  • How to Choose a Suitable 4×5 Camera: Guidance on selecting a camera that fits your needs. 
  • Understanding Your Camera: For those who have already purchased a camera, this will help you become familiar with its structure and operation. 
  • Principles and structure of large format cameras. 
  • Different Types of Large Format Cameras: Learn about the operation, characteristics, lens types, and general accessory use. 
  • Understanding Lenses, Film Holders, and Basic Accessories: Operation techniques and usage. 
  • Basic Metering and Introduction to the Zone System: A simple explanation of how to apply the Zone System. 
  • Hands-On Experience: Students will operate and practice with the 4×5 camera for outdoor photography of buildings, portraits, and landscapes. 
  • Demonstration: Developing 4×5 black and white film and printing photographs in a darkroom. 

Outdoor section will be arranged, and students will be informed of the details before lesson. Date and time of outdoor section is for reference only and may change depending on the weather conditions. 

Tutor
Woody Luk 

As a senior photographer in Hong Kong with over 30 years of experience, Luk graduated from the Photography Course at the Hong Kong Arts Centre in 1995. In 2012, he was the First Runner-Up in the Black and White photography category of the DCFever.com photography competition “Original Color, Impression”. He also received the Bronze Award in the Non-Professional category at the Hong Kong Institute of Professional Photographers’ Asian Photo Awards in 2007. 

 

Luk held a solo exhibition titled “Feelings of Feelings” at the Cityplaza in 1991 and has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including: the “Colourful Ironware” photography exhibition (2023); the “Art of Monochrome” photography exhibition at the Hong Kong International Photography Festival (2018); the “10th Black and White Nostalgia Photography Exhibition” featuring silver gelatin print photographers from Cross-strait and four places (2017); the 8th to 12th Tai Kok Tsui Temple Fair Photography Exhibitions (2012-2016), with the 10th exhibition sponsored by Epson Hong Kong; the “Stories of our neighbourhood” exhibition at Olympian City (2011); and the “Passion” at the First Hong Kong Photography Festival (2010), among others. Luk’s work is part of the collection at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum.
