Lyrics and Poetry – Chinese Calligraphy as Expression

This course explores the integration of Chinese calligraphy, poetry and lyrics. Students will master Running Script techniques, expressing lyrical and poetic meaning through calligraphy and blending traditional artistry with personal expression.

With a focus on the intersection of calligraphy, poetry and lyrics, students will be guided to explore how written characters can convey artistic and emotional depth. They will study and imitate classical works from masters such as Wang Xizhi, Zhao Mengfu, and Song Dynasty calligraphers as they learn the techniques and styles of Running Script while connecting these forms to the lyrical flow of poetry and music. This course emphasises the expressive potential of calligraphy in capturing the rhythm, tone and sentiment of Hong Kong poetry and Cantopop lyrics, encouraging students to integrate textual meaning with artistic composition. Through practice, analysis and creative exploration, students will develop the ability to transform poetic and lyrical ideas into visually compelling calligraphic works to foster a deeper appreciation of both literary and artistic traditions.
