Alumni Insights: Embracing Artistic Freedom over Conformity

Over the past few months, we’ve had the privilege of delving into the creative journeys and experiences of some esteemed alumni of our Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) programme. After years of dedication at the Hong Kong Art School and RMIT – Maria and Toby returned to their alma mater in August to showcase their art in a way that truly embodies the spirit of exploration in art education.

Maria recalls, ‘The teaching approach wasn’t about imposing rigid artistic norms but rather tailored guidance that allowed students the freedom to explore and experiment based on their unique interests and perspectives.’ This student-centred teaching method empowered her to unearth her inner creativity, leading to the birth of truly original artworks under the mentorship of her lecturers.

For Toby, the programme’s diversity and hands-on approach provided the liberty to choose various subjects and engage with a myriad of creative mediums. By collaborating with students and lecturers from diverse backgrounds, she deepened her understanding of art creation.

During the intensive week each semester and under the guidance of RMIT lecturers, students were challenged to complete a piece within just two weeks based on their interests and research. Maria admits that this rigorous process not only involved tackling material and technique challenges but also delving into the deeper meanings of their work. This practical learning experience not only enhanced her creative abilities but also instilled a critical eye for self-reflection in her artistry. ‘Exploring different mediums in our courses allows for ongoing experimentation and open exploration in our future creative endeavours,’ shares Toby.

As our alumni affirm, the essence of art education lies in guiding students to bravely explore, experiment, and push beyond their limits.
