CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY: RUNNING SCRIPT

COURSE FEATURES
Beautiful penmanship is an art. And the ancient art form of Chinese calligraphy is even harder to master due to the simplicity of brush, ink and rice paper that requires greater steadiness of hand and focus. But what fun to give it a go! 

 Over 10 lessons, students will have traversed the graceful arcs of running script – from its storied past to its practical strokes. They will emerge with a deeper appreciation for this ancient art form as well as the skills to craft their pieces, reflecting their unique interpretation and creativity within this celebrated tradition. 

 Embarking on this journey through the elegant world of running script, students will:
– Be introduced to the rich history and evolution of Chinese calligraphy
– Solidify the fundamentals of running script calligraphy while developing a personal artistic styles
– Study the different running scripts of Wang Xizhi, the Song Dynasty, and Zhao Mengfu’s semi-cursive
– Learn the intricacies of stroke application and joining techniques
– Create their own works that emulate the rhythm and fluidity of this traditional art to showcase individual mastery and creativity

TUTOR
William Ho Wai Lam apprenticed under Dr. Chui Pui Chee. After graduating from Kings College, Hong Kong in 2019, William obtained a Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honours) in Visual Art from Hong Kong Baptist University in 2023 and is currently pursuing a Master of Philosophy in Visual Arts. William specialises in Chinese calligraphy and is a member of The Jiazi Society of Calligraphy. Rooted in traditional techniques, William integrates calligraphy into contemporary context and explores the modernity of this art form.
